Economic Development Update
Devin Hillam, Community Services & Economic Development Director
1/25/22

• No design review meetings were held in January 2022.
• 2 new private site selectors reached out to identify land for commercial uses. Property and
contact information were conveyed.
• A substantial amount of time was spent in January working with some potential businesses,
landowners, and brokers on some deals. No specific information can be released at this time by our
office.
• Pocatello MSA (which includes Chubbuck) economic development trends.
o Federal Reserve (St. Louis) Unemployment Rate (seasonally adjusted rates
Gathered 12/20/21):
• November 2021- 2.6% (tied with our 2018 -early 2020 low rate)
• October 2021- 2.8%

• There is either a discrepancy between the Federal Reserve data and Idaho's data or there is a
discrepancy between the Pocatello MSA and Bannock County (as a whole) as found in this
information gathered by from the Idaho Dept. of Labor's website (https://Imi.idaho.gov/ui-
reports):
o November 2021 (revised)- 2.0%
o December 2021 (preliminary)- 1.7% (State of Idaho = 2.4%)
• At the end of 2021, the nation had seen a 7% annual inflation rate, the highest rate in 1981.
Although some forecast that the inflation rate will slow down in 2022, particularly with likely Fed
interest rate hikes, higher costs are being felt by our businesses and residents alike. I continue to
urge for the creation of policies which will add resilience and wealth to our households such as
community gardens, fruit trees in parks, targeted investments with urban renewal projects, value
adding amenities (paths, bike lanes, parks), etc.
