WHEREAS, on November 3, 1973, the President signed into
law a $154.3 millon authorization bill for the Amtrack Rail System;
and
WHEREAS, one section of the new law provides that Amtrack
shall establish one experimental route each year and operate it
for a period of two years; and
WHEREAS, the Idaho Bail ~assenger Users Association has
proposed the establish~mnt of such an experimental route by Amtrack
along Union Pacifie rail lines between Kansas City, Missouri, and
Portland, Oregon, via Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and
Pocatello, Idaho; and
WHEREAS, rail transportation has been demonstrated as
more economical than alternative forms of transport by automobile
or air; and
WHEREAS, the successful operation of the proposed route
would contribute significantly to the current national program
for conservation of energy in time of scarcity;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE COUNCIL
OF~TTHE CITY OF CHUBBUCK, IDAHO, that full support be extended to
the Idaho Rail Passenger Users Association in its efforts to
restore rail service for Idaho people. The United States Depart-
ment of Transportation is earnestly requested to commence operation
of the proposed experimental route at the earliest feasible date.
The commitment of Idaho's Congressional delegation to this
objective is solicited; and each Congressman or Senator is urged
to communicate to all appropriate agencies and in all appropriate
public forums the concerns of their Idaho constituents for timely
restoration of rail service.
