RESOLUTION NO. ]-79
WHEREAS, the Amtrak "Pioneer" passenger train runs from
Salt Lake City through southeast Idaho to Seattle under a
two-year experimental period which began in June, 1977; and
WHEREAS, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of
Transportation has recommended closure of the "Pioneer"
route; and
WHEREA~, the Chubbuck City Council recognizes the need
to reduce the subsidies made to the Amtrak system, but urges
that such reductions should be made based upon the cost and
revenue records of each route in the system; and
W}IEREAS, the "Pioneer" was the fourth least costly
train in the Amtrak system in 1977 based on fully allocated
profit-loss per passenger mile, and thus outperformed all but
three of Amtrak's 250 trains in only its first year of
operation; and
WHEREAS, the "Pioneer" has not yet reached the end of
its two-year experimental period and the figures indicate
that its performance in the second year will be better than
its performance in the first year; and
WHEREAS, notwithstanding the fact that the time schedule
is inconvenient, the boardings at Pocatello are higher than
at any other location in the State, evidencing high interest
by southeast Idaho residents in continuing the "Pioneer": and
WHEREAS, demand for enerzy-efficient rail passenger
transportation will increase as petroleum prices continue
to rise;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council
of the City of Chubbuck, Idaho, that:
1. The Mayor and Council find, and hereby
declare, that the public interest is served by the continuation
of the "Pioneer" Amtrak route.
