Prior to this meeting, residents of Victorian Village suggested that the training include an entirely new approach to neighborhood safety; basically keeping our children safe from being abducted right out of our very own neighborhoods. With a lot of the abductions that are occurring lately: Amber Hoops, Idaho Falls; Elizabeth Smart, Salt Lake City; and Samantha Reunion, California; they are happening right out of the neighborhoods that they lived in; that we have always considered a safe place to live. Unfortunately, a lot of abductors live right in the same neighborhood. Some of the abductors that do not, have previous ties to that neighborhood, or the abductor is someone that the child has run across before. Last of all, there is a category of abductors that are totally strangers that drive around finding the right opportunity to abduct a child. At the Neighborhood Watch meetings, we focus on this main concern within our neighborhoods. As your Chief, I have committed to the training myself. I have a major concern for the safety of our children, and secondly, it gives me the opportunity to meet you, and you to meet me. This is an ideal time of year to hold Neighborhood Watch meetings, because they can be done in our back yards. I am also available to give talks on this area at local functions, church gatherings, or elsewhere. For further information, or to set up a meeting, call me at the Chubbuck Police Dept. 237-7172.
