Being your Mayor for so many years has been a great experience for me because you the citizens have treated me royally. I can honestly say that I have had only two individuals in 36 years who have come into the Mayor's office and were "sore" at me. Thanks for the experience. I want to thank each of you who have contributed to those who have been in the hurricane disaster. We have contributed food, clothing and money from our area and town. We have the holiday season, Thanksgiving and Christmas, coming in a few days. If you can remember those in our area who may not have the means to enjoy these holidays. If you can contribute to your church, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross or the United Way of Southeast Idaho. These are those who need assistance. The general elections will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2005. All voting will be at the City Hall. We will divide alphabetically so that four lines can vote at a time. We feel this is the most efficient way to probably handle a large turnout. Vote early if possible. The polls open at 8 AM and close at 8 PM. If you are new to the City of Chubbuck and have not registered you can do so at the polls when you vote. You will need identification as to where you live, a utility bill will be sufficient and your drivers license with picture. If you have tree limbs that need be chipped call the city (237-2430) and we shall arrange a time for this. With Christmas coming we will pick up Christmas trees and extra garbage December 26 to 30th, 2005. We have had large construction in our area__ this past summer. I am certain you who drive into the City of Pocatello have circumnavi- gated the busy streets whenever possible. Yellowstone will be extremely busy during the holidays and Hawthorne or Hiline Roads are good bypass routes. Even Philbin to the West can be utilized. Be especially aware of your driving and also the other persons driving. When turning left on a three lane street or a five lane be sure to drive into the turn bay completely to make the turn. Do not leave the back end of your car remaining in the busy street. Halloween is upon us and youngsters will be about our neighborhoods. Be aware of these young people as you drive the streets. Parents accompany your small children. We have been very fortunate through all the years that we have not had any accident or a child molested in any way during these holidays. In your homes be aware of keeping your doors locked night and day. We have problem individuals living in our city so watch your children and yourselves. Speed bumps will be in place in a few days near Mark and Mary Bunce Park and also the Hart Park on the north rim of the canyon. When these are placed if you have a thought where we should place these bumps to protect a park, please advise the Mayor. The round- about on East Chubbuck Road seems to be a complete success. It certainly moves traffic and slows speeders. If this is my last letter to you citizens of Chubbuck, again, I thank you for the wonderful experience. With your support through the years we have accomplished many improvements in our community. I firmly believe that the future is bright for Chubbuck and our greatest days are ahead. (Ronald Reagan quote about America). Mayor Cotant .I • The fall air is upon us and the snow will not be far behind. With fall, that means that Halloween is just around the corner as well. If your children go trick or treating please ensure that you escort them and they have well lit clothing or flashlights so that the motorists can see them. Anytime a child puts on a mask of any kind that will restrict their vision, try and use make up or face paint if possible. Remind them also, to only go to neighbor's homes that they know or go to participating businesses that will be celebrat- ing the holiday. If you are going to be in your vehicle Halloween night use extreme caution and we would recommend that you go slower than the posted 20 mph speed limit in the residential areas. Chubbuck has more and more children in the city each year and we all need to be watching out for them. Happy Halloween! • In July of this year the State Legislator's passed a new law regarding child safety seats. The new law states that any child six years of age or younger must be secured in a child safety restraint seat. This means that if your child is not 7 years old they must be in a child booster seat. This law was passed for the safety of all of the children in the state of Idaho, and hopefully we will have fewer injuries in crashes because of it. Remember we all need to buckle up for our own safety as well. If you have any questions regarding child safety seats please contact either one of our child safety seat technician's, Officer Gilbert or Officer Orr. • On September 8th in the Wal-Mart parking lot, a female subject was unloading merchan- dise from her shopping cart to her vehicle. An unidentified male subject approached her and grabbed her purse as it was sitting in the top portion of the shopping cart. This was all done very quickly and the victim was unaware of what happened for a few mo- ments. The male subject then dove head first into a vehicle and fled the area. It is believed that the suspect and the driver of the vehicle were prowling through the parking lot looking for potential victim(s). On 9-19-05 a very similar incident occurred in the Smith's Food King parking lot, however in this case the wallet was removed from the victim's hand. Both theft's occurred in the afternoon hours in broad daylight. Always try and be aware of your surroundings and your personal belongings while you are out and about, and if you see anything suspicious report it immediately. • During the month of September the Chubbuck Police Department responded to 573 calls for service, 5220 for the calendar year 2005. If you have any questions or comments please call the Chubbuck Police Department at 237-7172 PUBLIC WORKS Plugged Sewer Pumps Our sewer system includes lift (pump) stations in several neighborhoods, including by Ellis School. The Ellis Lift Station pumps have been plugged more than ten times -just since February. Heavy paper and fiber towels have been drawn in and accumulated to the point where the pumps could no longer work. Each time they are plugged, it is necessary to remove the pumps to clear the blockage. Not only is this expensive to our city, it is poses a serious risk for flooding. When the pumps are not working, the sewage could fill the wet well and sewer lines to the point where the overflow would end up in residential base- ments. We need your cooperation! Please do not dispose of paper towels, diapers, sanitary napkins and the like, in toilets or drains. If we are not able to solve the problem by eliminating these products in the system, the city would have to install specialty equipment. Adding this equipment can only be done by a significant and costly lift station remodel, which would likely lead to a surcharge for customers on that station in order to cover the expense. Again, to prevent further needless expense and possibly sewage flooding into your basement, please do not dispose of these materials in the toilets or drains. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact us at the city offices. 237-2430. lilt TELL IT TO CITY HALL In our democratic form of government, city employees are public servants.
