HomeMy WebLinkAbout09The Connection City of Chubbuck Newsletter Vol. 1 Issue 7 Message from the Mayor: September 2006 Thanks to your participation, Chubbuck Days activities were an unqualified success. Both the parade and festi- val were well attended and fun. We have learned some things that we will probably do a little differently next year, but we also learned that other aspects of the celebration should well be repeated. If you have any sugges- tions, please let us know. School is starting again, and we would like to remind you of related changes. Speed limits in school zones will again be enforced. We have the new signs and flashers at both Chubbuck and Ellis schools. They have been programmed to function during the times and days that children may be present, and speed should be reduced. Please be observant of these areas, as well as anywhere school children may be. Thank you for this courtesy. We have also been informed of a couple of other issues that we would share with you and ask for your help. If you observe any activity that you consider vandalistic, especially in our park facilities, would you please help by at least reporting it? We have had toilets plugged with mud, spray painting, broken restroom fixtures, etc. It is not yet epidemic, but is an expense to repair. Vandalism diverts precious resources that could be put to better use. Also, if you would be considerate of your neighbors when doing yard work or home repairs as it relates to late night or early morning noise, construction trash that could blow out of your yard, and picking up weeds and lawn clippings rather than blowing them into the street, etc. Just remember to apply the "Golden Rule" princi- ple. Thanks for all you do in our community to make it better. Although the city is growing, we have for the most part been able to maintain a friendly and personable atmosphere. Chubbuck is a great place to live and do busi- ness! Mayor England OUR PHILIPPINE SISTER CITY - CORELLA, BOHOL The International Sister City pro- gram is a way of developing a posi- tive relationship with a developing country. The city of Corella, pro- nounced "Cor-el-ya", is Chubbuck's Sister City in Bohol Province, Phil- ippines. Building business and per- sonal relationships with Bohol will help strengthen a developing de- mocracy, and sharing our resources will give hope to a community that is struggling economically. From the 1500s to about 1829, Bo- hol was occupied by Spain, and the culture still reflects this influence. During World War II, Americans and Filipinos fought Japan as allies. The Japanese were defeated in the Battle of the Philippines in 1944, and though the islands were tempo - racily claimed as US territory, inde- pendence was granted in 1946. The people remain allied with America, and English is their language. AMI Semiconductor has a plant in the Philippines. With humanitarian projects, a little bit goes a long way. Their needs are fairly basic, and all help is greatly appreciated. Educational exchange is very valu- able, whether it is an exchange stu- dent or just communication between' school groups. Joan Collett's first grade class at Chubbuck Elementary School studied the Philippines and wrote letters to Corella students. Idaho State University donated books and materials for their schools. Maybe you know a class or club that would like to get involved with the warm and enthusiastic people of Corella, Bohol. Anyone who is in- terested in participating in our Sister City program can contact the City Offices.
