City of Chubbuck Newsletter
Vol. 3 Issue 8 August 2008
Message from the Mayor:
Welcome to summer in Idaho! Even though we have our weather extremes occasionally, it is great to live where the sea-
sons change, and we know that, if a particular few days are unpleasant, it will pass. Please remember the cautions and
tips associated with hot weather. Water use, pet safety, air conditioner usage, and drinking plenty of fluids are a few of
the things to consider. If you have an elderly neighbor, especially one who lives alone, it would be well to be aware of
them. Thanks for all you do to be good neighbors.
I hope you are all planning to participate with us this year in the Chubbuck Days celebration. The parade and festival
are scheduled for Saturday, August 9'''. We are again going to provide a youth dance at the hockey rink on Friday eve-
ning. We have provided more detailed information about this event and other activities on the back of this newsletter.
Our effort is to make this a fun, exciting and family-oriented experience. Bring your friends and neighbors, and we'll see
you there.
Our community has recently been impacted by a drowning of one of our residents. Even though it did not occur in the
city, I would again caution you of the danger associated with the open canals in the city. They are necessary to provide
irrigation, as you know. The canals should never be considered a source of recreation. There are a variety of issues in-
volved with piping all of them, not the least of which is cost. We welcome suggestions that would help us make them as
safe as possible. Please help by reminding children that you have influence with of the dangers.
Enjoy the rest of the summer! Thanks for all you do to help make Chubbuck a great place to live and do business.

FIRE PREVENTION
Recently the Fire Department has seen an increase in fires started by children. The following
items are ways that adults may use to help safeguard our families from fire danger.
♦ Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, up high and preferably in a
locked cabinet.
♦ Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate
you.
♦ If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly
explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only.
♦ Use only lighters designed with child -resistant features. Remember child -resistant does
not mean child proof.
♦ Teach young children to tell an adult if they see matches or lighters, and teach school-age
children to bring any matches or lighters to an adult.
♦ Never leave matches or lighters in a bedroom or any place where children may go without
supervision.
♦ If you suspect your child is intentionally setting fires or unduly fascinated with fire, get
help. Your local fire department, school, or community counseling agency can put you in
touch with trained experts.
