Vol. 2 Issue 5 May 2007
Message from the Mayor:
The old adage says "April showers bring May flowers". As I am writing this letter, we are having another one of
those wet April days. It does help us with our summer season water use and provides additional water content
in the soil. With the reduced snow pack this spring, we have appreciated the moisture.
Let me just give a couple of reminders. As the weather gets better and evenings are longer, we again have more
children present outside in our parks and neighborhoods. The speed limit in our residential neighborhoods is
20 MPH. Please be observant, not only of the speed limit, but also of children and their unpredictable behavior.
Our neighborhood parks were designed to accommodate children playing. Please encourage them to use these
facilities rather than playing games in the street. Let's all work together to have a safe summer.
We are joining with the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Pocatello again this year in an area wide clean up
project. I have signed a joint proclamation with Mayor Chase to proclaim Saturday, May 5"'- as "City Wide Clean
Up Day". Information is included in this letter on what Chubbuck will have available that day to assist you. We
encourage you to get together as neighbors and take on a project that goes beyond your own yard. There will be
a community kick off that morning in the 400 block of the UP parking lot in Old Town Pocatello. It will include
a free breakfast from 8:00-10:30 AM and the kick off for this season's Farmers Market from 9:00 AM to 1:00
PM. Plan to participate some way that day!
Thanks again for your participation in our community. Each of you can and do assist in making Chubbuck
such a great place to live and do business.
Mayor England
Seventh Annual Spring Cleanup - May 5th
We are happy to announce Saturday, May 5`h as the day
both Chubbuck and Pocatello proclaim as City Wide
Cleanup Day. Chubbuck is a great place to live, and our
community pride is reflected in neighborhood cleanliness
and appearance. While the City can provide support in
removing any trash or yard debris that is collected, we
need your help. We invite everyone in town to clean up
their own property, and also to pitch in on neighborhood
efforts. Here's our plan:
Oversized Roll -off Containers - Please make good
use of the roll -off containers, generously contributed by
Snake River Dispose -All, at the two locations listed be-
low. But please, do not abuse the service by throwing in
hazardous or restricted waste.
Container Sites:
City Hall 5160 Yellowstone *branch chipping*
Cotant Park Victor & Teton
Group Cleanup Projects -Citizens unite! We encour-
age any group to gather up and bag litter on May 5th (or
right before). If it won't fit in your garbage cart, you
could put them into the oversized roll -off containers pro-
vided by Snake River Dispose -All at the two locations
listed above. If necessary, put the bags of litter out near
the curb, call and our City crew will pick thein up on
Monday.
Branch - Chipping - Since tree or bush branches fill up
the roll -offs quickly, the City will be prepared to run them
through the chipper for you at City Hall. The bases of the
branches can be no more than 6 inches in diameter.
Please bring them to the City site and our attendant will
chip them.
Whether you can clean only your yard or an entire
neighborhood, your effort will be appreciated. Normally,
it costs you money to dump trash at the county landfill.
Don't miss this opportunity!
East Chubbuck Road Closure for I-15 Bridge Deck Repair
You may already be quite aware
of the project that has shut down
East Chubbuck Road just past the
roundabout, especially if you are a
Highland High School student.
This is a state project run by the
Idaho Transportation Department
(ITD), but we will share a few
details that we know.
e East Chubbuck Road from the
roundabout to Fairgrounds
Road is completely closed. The
detour sends you south on
Hiline Road.
Sticky Subject
Every year, we get calls
about waste stuck in the
bottom of the garbage
cart that did not come loose when it
was dumped. The best way to pre-
vent garbage from sticking is to bag
everything you put in the cart. This
is a great way to make use of those
leftover plastic grocery bags. Of
course, you might want to use some-
thing larger for those grass clip-
pings.
• The lane going north from I-86
at the "flying Y" will some-
times be closed. The detour
takes you south to the Pocatello
Creek exit, where you will need
to turn left and go under the
freeway to get back on I-15
North.
• Some lanes on I-15 will some-
times be closed.
• The project began April 16th
and is expected to last 45 days,
weather permitting.
Grass clippings are notorious for
sticking solidly in the cart. Bagging
not only prevents smelly goo from
coating the container, it also keeps
trash from flying away as it is
dumped out into the truck. Another
tip is to spray the bottom of the cart
with cooking spray to keep trash
from sticking. Washing out a dirty
cart is the last thing anyone would
want to be doing on Saturday, so we
hope these hints save you some
cleaning time!
Eastern Idaho has seen plenty of cases of West
Nile Virus (WNV), especially Bingham County
just north of us. Mosquitoes can infect humans
by biting them after feeding on virus infected
birds. But we can all play a part in limiting
opportunities for this to happen.
City Staff attended up-to-date training on rec-
ognizing risk areas and on methods of mos-
quito control. We intend to apply this knowl-
FIGHT edge to prevent many mosquitoes from hatch -
THE ing in the first place. We will also use this
newsletter to share some basic WNV preven-
B1T7+: tion information over the next few months.
Here are some brief main points to start with:
• ITD may work some Saturdays
or Sundays to get it done.
• They are blasting off the top 2
inches of old bridge decking
and repouring a new deck. The
road shoulders leading up to the
bridge will be widened.
Please direct any more specific
questions to Idaho Transportation
Department (ITD) at 239-3300.

These Saturdays from 9:00 AM to
3:00 PM are your opportunity to
get rid of anything poisonous,
flammable, hazardous, corrosive
or explosive! Call the landfill at
236-0607 if you have questions.
* Eliminate standing water. It only takes an
inch or two of water for mosquitoes to breed
profusely. Empty planters, kids toys or any-
thing else holding puddles. Keep birdbaths
or ponds clean. Make sure the areas for col-
lecting stormwater on your property (swales)
drain within five to six days.
* Outdoor exposure: cover your skin, use re-
pellant, and avoid being out at dawn or dusk.
* Repair or install screens on windows and
doors.
Have horses vaccinated. One-third of WNV
infected horses die.
