Vol. 4 Issue S
Message from the Mayor:
May 2009
Cooler temperatures and the threat of snow just seem to want to linger this spring. As least they say that we had a normal
water year this winter, and this type of weather allows the snow pack to melt slower, so it is more manageable. We hope
our sputtering weather soon gives way to more consistent spring days. We are joining with the Chamber of Commerce
and the City of Pocatello again this Saturday in a community wide clean up project. We have included in this letter, infor-
mation on what we as a city will have available that day to assist you. We encourage you to get together as neighbors and
take on a project that goes beyond your own yard. There will be a community kick-off that morning in the 400 block of
the UP parking lot in Old Town Pocatello at 8:45 AM. It will include a free breakfast from 8:00 to 10:30 AM and the
opening of this season's Farmers Market from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Plan to participate some way that day!
As mentioned last month, we met the threshold of minimum number of sign-ups to move forward with curbside recycling
in the city. We plan to launch the program in June and will be providing more details this next month. Also, we remind
you that with spring weather more children will be out and about in our neighborhoods. Boys baseball and girls softball
programs will begin playing this month, with tee ball and roller hockey soon after. There is much to be positive about as
we anticipate another great summer season.
Thanks again for your participation in our community. Each of you can and do assist in continuing to make Chubbuck a
great place to live and do business.

Saturday, May 2nd is the day both
Chubbuck and Pocatello will be
teaming up for Community Wide
Cleanup Day. Here's our plan:
Oversized Roll -off Containers
Please make good use of the roll -off
containers at the two locations listed
below. But please, do not abuse the
service by throwing in hazardous or
restricted waste.

Group Cleanup Projects
We encourage any group to gather up
and bag litter on May 2nd (or right
before). If it won't fit in your gar-
bage cart, you could put them into
the oversized roll -off containers
Branch Chipping
Since tree or bush branches fill up
the roll -offs quickly, the City will be
prepared to run them through the
chipper for you at City Hall. The
bases of the branches must be less
than six inches in diameter. Please
bring them to the City site and our
attendants will chip them.
Whether you can clean only your
yard or an entire neighborhood, your
effort will be appreciated. To get rid
of anything poisonous, flammable,
hazardous, corrosive or explosive on
May 2nd, visit the Bannock County
Landfill.
The State of Kansas found a
65% average drop in traffic de-
lays with the use of properly
designed roundabouts, accord-
ing to a Kansas State
University study.
Rather than coming to a
complete stop, cars flow
more smoothly through
the intersection. While
Europeans are familiar
with roundabouts, more and
more Americans are learning to
adapt the design and enjoy the
benefits.

Carmel, Indiana, experienced a
78% decrease in accidents in-
volving injuries after building
fifty roundabouts in its commu-
nity in the last seven
years. With cars all
moving the same direc-
tion, devastating head-on
collisions are almost im-
possible and the slow
speed gives drivers more
reaction time to prevent acci-
dents.
Rules foe flevigetion
• Slow down
Pedestrians benefit when drivers
• Choose your lane carefully according to the signs and markings.
• Yield to vehicles already in the circle.
• Do not pass large trucks. Stay behind them.
• Pull over outside the circle for emergency vehicles. Either stop before
entering or get out before pulling over.
are looking at them instead of
the changing traffic lights.
In addition, the City of Carmel
found a savings of about 24,000
gallons of gasoline per year be-
cause of the reduction in cars
idling. Less idling also means
less emissions, which is another
benefit.
Roundabouts cost the taxpayers
less to build than signalized in-
tersections, and they also save
emissions, time, gasoline and
serious accidents.
